You're The Voice: Susan on the never-ending to-read pile

I have so many books on my to-read pile that it’s toppling over. Personally, I am a very lazy reader and procrastinate heaps on reading. I see a book, or hear about one and I’m like, “Yep that sounds wicked. I’ll read that tonight/next week/next month/in a year/whenever I’m free/okay never ending up reading it.” If I’m assigned to read for school, I’ll do it. But I generally suck at reading for leisure, since I have some kind of logic that’s telling me that there is time, you don’t have to read it now and that I have other things to do. At the same time, I do want to read it; I just seriously have no motivation. So here are some thoughts on why I am so lazy; my motivation; and less than 0.01% of books that are on my to-read pile.

Books that are on my to-read pile are new YA releases (most are paranormal; yes I am still in this phase :)  ), upcoming book to movie adaptations, books I’ve heard about excessively, series with good reviews and any other books that have been buzzing around the atmosphere.

I have yet to read upcoming book to movie adaptations like The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare (ugh I know, I am ashamed; it's in my to-read pile… ahem), Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr and The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I really need to get to them before the films are released; I hate watching the movie without reading it first!

I confess, I actually haven’t read the last books in Twilight and The Hunger Games and most of the Harry Potter series yet... *hides face in shame* I honestly do not know why- I just don’t seem to have time (my excuse for everything).

Series I have been meaning to read include Shiver,Hush Hush, Delirium, Divergent, Matched… The list goes on forever.

I’ll have to admit, they’re mainly popular, well known series and books that I feel the need to read in order to stay in whatever ‘loop’ readers have. There is always a voice in the back of my head nagging me just to read them then, and I basically see my bookshelf crying tears of isolation and desperation. Stressful, really.

What motivates me to read, however, is if the book grabs me from the first few pages. I cannot get through a book if it has a slow introduction or plot development. I’ll also read if I’ve been recommended a book or it has fantastic reviews. That is an important factor for me, good reviews; reading books with poor reviews is just time consuming, given my endless list!

I guess I am lazy because I know that I don’t have to read it just yet, so I put it off until forever. Social networking and ever-advancing technology also play a part in my procrastination…

I think I should just stop feeling the need to read books in order to stay up to date and because everyone else is, but rather read because I want to and I enjoy it. Yep I think that would take the stress off a bit.

Oh my, welcome to the story of my life. Well, not really. I'm not one to just read things just 'cause they're popular, and I don't always trust reviews. To me there are some brilliant books out there that don't get the appreciation they deserve, and there are other... *echhem* not so great books out there that get more praise than needed. But I can totally relate on the forever growing-never ending pile of 'to-read'. For me, if it's not availability, it's SCHOOL. I always have Some Big Test coming up, so I say: 'You know what, I'll start this after, I don't want to get distracted'. I've been doing that all year, until, at some point, I had an epiphany. I realise, rather morbidly, that it will never end. Ever. So I stopped the procrastination and I'm proud to say I'm getting somewhere with my to-reads list... not very fast, but yes. Sometimes you just have to knuckle down and do it. Simple as that :P

*Wipes tear from eye.* Thank you so much Diem oh gosh you are so lovely. Haha you have the best book recommendations but I am such a terrible reader in my spare time! I wish I had that ability to forget about everything else whilst reading, lucky duck. Haha thanks, the next post is my last. <3

Hi Susan. Great post! I think that you should consider recommendations given to you...most of them are from me... as books that you will check out and possibly read one day. Also, I think you shouldn't feel the need to read a book because everyone else is reading it. Yeah.... I do feel the same way that you feel. Except when I get a good book handed to me I will read it and forget about everything else I am supposed to do. Anyway, I great post. I am looking forward to your other posts.
