White Cat

by Holly Black

reviewed by Lili Wilkinson

.

It’s like the Sopranos. But with magic gypsy curses. Cassel is a member of a family of curse-working mobsters. Magic was banned during the Prohibition era, and everyone wears gloves so they can’t be illegally cursed. But Cassel can’t do magic. He isn’t one of them. He’s a good guy. Really. Except for the bit where he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago. But apart from that he’s totally normal. Until he starts to sleepwalk and have nightmares where a white cat is trying to tell him something. Suddenly Cassel is plagued with questions. What are his brothers up to? Is Cassel, the master of the con, being conned himself? What really happened to Lila? And why is the white cat from his dreams suddenly in his backyard?

White Cat is a big departure for Holly Black (who is best known for the gothic Spiderwick books and Tithe), and I can’t wait for Book Two.
