When You Reach Me

Rebecca Stead

review by Cordelia Rice

When You Reach Me – Rebecca Stead

Miranda lives in New York City in 1979. She is a latch-key kid. She walks home from school each afternoon and waits there for her mother to finish work. Miranda’s best and only friend is Sal, they have lived in the same apartment building their entire lives. One day while walking home Sal gets punched and Miranda’s small world begins to change dramatically. Sal ignores Miranda, leaving her without any friends, forcing her to walk home alone. Then Miranda discovers a crumpled, mysterious note that seems to accurately predict the future and her small world begins to expand rapidly.

When You Reach Me is lovely novel, the polished writing makes it a quick read and the complex ideas easy to understand. The fantastic resolution of the book will have you wanting to re-read it immediately just to see how all the pieces fit together.

When You Reach Me is the winner of the 2010 Newbery Medal.
