In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enhanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discovered, it is also dangerous. There is only survival by secrecy, and so she determines never to use her forbidden powers. But it is as if they have their own imperative, and their use inevitably brings her to the attention of the totalitarian Council that rules the Land . . .

Obernewtyn is a book that I reread recently after reading it for the first time a few years ago. I had it on the shelf at home and decided to give it a go as I was in between piles of books at the time. I thought I would read it a bit and rediscover the world of Elspeth, but what I didn't expect was to love it! Isobelle Carmody wove the story expertly and drew me in to the uncertain world of misfits in a world where misfits are distrusted and the Council rules and authoritarian government.

A great read for any fantasy lover and a great story with a strong heroine.

The first book in a whole series, and it is absolutely amazing.

The orphan Elspeth Gordie is a misfit, someone with enhanced mental  powers, and is sent to live at Obernewtyn, when it is discovered. Misfits are outlaws, Mutants, and can never properly fit in.

Elspeth's only true companion on this journey is a half-mad cat called Maruman, who tells her that she is the only one who can save the world from another devastating apocalypse, one that will destroy the world forever.

Ariel is supremely evil, and her rival- although you're not supposed to learn that till a later book!!

This book is about Elspeth Gordie, who has special powers, and is trying to live after an apocalypse has just passed. When she is found by the Council, and brought to the mysterious place called Obernewton, she must use her powers more than anything to save her, and her friend's life. This book is exciting and mysterious, and it is nearly impossible to put down.

Elspeth Gordie is a young girl who is born in the time after the Apocalypse or 'Great White' as it is called. The world is striving to rebuild and is ruled by an all-powerful council that try to control anything percieved as different that could be threat to their rule. They do not want any recall of the past or a repeat of what happened and thus punish or burn those who may be a danger. Elspeth is one of few known as 'Misfits' that are born with special mental abilities who are percecuted from birth. Little does Elspeth know that she is far different from the other Misfits and that she alone has the power to save the world she knows from repeating its destruction. Together with her faithful companion Maruman the cat Elspeth must travel to the remote community of Obernewtyn where her task begins in earnest.

This is good book for anybody who is interested in fantasy and other times. It is gripping and will leave you wondering what is to come next. Garunteed to keep you hooked until the end.
