The hole was moving! The walls were falling down... There was a rope under his arms. There was a face above. An anxious face, yelling something down to him, something he didn't understand. A strange face, with something wrong about the eyes. Tanned skin, unshaven, black hair a bit too long...
Joey knows there is a Japanese soldier hiding in the hills. It was a Japanese man, a soldier, who hauled him out of the mine shaft, who lit the fire to bring the searchers, and then disappeared. But nobody believes Joey. After all, it is World War II and children have nightmares...Joey knows he will have to find the soldier himself...he must find him, he could be part of an invasion force...could he be sending messages to waiting submarines?
Soldier on the Hill keeps you waiting till the twisted end which I thought was a little let down which leaves you thinking and confused. This is a sad story which touched my heart and will play with you're brain. I enjoyed this book because even though it is not the most exciting book it is an interesting story with a lot of meaning. I rated this 4/5 because it was too sad sometimes and depressing, I wouldn't recommend it for younger readers under 11.
Soldier on the hill, is during World War Two where a boy named Joey had to move from Sydney up to a country town so he would be safe from enemy submarines. While he was in Biscuit Creek, he fell down an abandoned mine and everything was in despair until a single Japanese soldier pulled him out. Joey lived in fear of the Jap for a long time, but eventualy realised that just because the soldier came from Japan, it doesn't mean that he is a bad person. It was a sad, confusing and emotional book, that was filled with problems and conflict that Joey had to overcome. I recommend this book for people eleven years and older.
Soldier on the hill was a very interesting book about war. It dragged on a little bit towards the middle and some bits in the book were pointless. It gave gave you a good idea about what life was like for women and children back in World War ll. We recommend this book for ages 10+ if you are a confident reader. All in all this book is creative, extends your thinking and the ending is unexpected.
This book was quite average. It didn’t really make me feel excited to read it. Instead of wanting to get to the next page I actually thought about putting it down. I felt that it was way too long. Honestly, it was a waste of my life reading it. I felt the same thing just repeated on every chapter. He would just keep going up and looking for the soldier but never had success. I was kind of hoping that the sheriff would believe him and capture the soldier so the book was over. The book kept saying that the Japanese would attack but it never happened. Overall, the book didn’t really interest me!
SOLIDER ON THE HILL: A HISTORIC TALE
Do you enjoy reading about war and adventure? Then if you do then you will want to read solider on the hill by Jackie French. This is a story based in 1942 which is during WORLD WAR II.
Joey claims a Japanese solider rescued him when he fell into an old mineshaft. Will he find the solider or is the solider just in his imagination. Every time they try and find the solider they fail.
I won’t tell you how it ends but what I can tell you is it a really bad book if you don’t like adventure and war. But if you like war and adventure then you will find this a very catchy book and you will never want to put it down.
I personally don’t like the book because it is boring. Jackie French makes a really boring book sound kind of interesting so if you want a book that is about war and adventure then I recommend solider on the hill.
Will Joey find the Japanese solider? Or will everyone think that he is completely mental? If you want to read a book about war and adventure than this is the perfect book for you!
