It’s the beginning of the 20th century; the age of scientific progress. But for Venice the future looks bleak. A conference of scientists assembles to address the problems, among whose delegates are the parents of twelve-year-old Teodora. Within days of her arrival, she is subsumed into the secret life of Venice: a world in which salty-tongued mermaids run subversive printing presses, ghosts good and bad patrol the streets and librarians turn fluidly into cats. A battle against forces determined to destroy the city once and for all quickly ensues. Only Teo, the undrowned child who survived a tragic accident as a baby, can go ‘between the linings’ to subvert evil and restore order.

Awesome book! Perfectly mixes an amazing storyline with almost a real-life history of venice. Acapivating read. I would recommend it to advanced readers in grade 5 onwards.

The Undrowned Child by Michelle Lovric is a dark, magical book set in an alternate Venice. This historical fiction read is full of sinister themes, characters and occurences, which make it all the more gripping.

Venice is is peril. Water wells are gushing boiling hot, poisonus water, and more than several children have been dragged beneath the inky depths of the many canals. Everyone can see it, even the rest of the world - only the idiot mayor has refused to pay any attention to the strange occurences, and continues to pretend that Venice is still safe for tourists.

When Teodora, a young tourist who has wanted to visit Venice all her life, finds a mysterious book, she is plunged into a magical world full of ghosts and mermaids. But this perfect city is in danger, and so is the rest of the world. Together with Lorenzo, Teodora must save Venice from an ancient threat. Bajamonte Tiepolo, also known as II Traditore has returned from the depths of the canals, as a desparate ghost, where he has been hiding for over 100 years. He feels he was wronged by Venice those many years ago, and he is back for revenge.

This book is my new personal favourite, quickly taking the number one spot on my list of top books. A really good read for any fan of historical fiction/fantasy. I think this book would appeal to fans of Ingo (by Helen Dunmore) and the Dragonkeeper series. The only possible fault I can find in this book is the lack of humor, there are no funny bits.

The Undrowned Child was a thrilling and gripping book - I couldn't put it down!

I've never read such a good book. It quickly too the top spot on my list of favourite books.
