Her mum has told her to never mention the war to Misery and Batty, her disapproving grandmother and cranky great-grandmother. So Darcy tries sneakery - going through drawers when Misery and Batty aren't home - and she finds a photo of a man in army uniform. Written on the back are the words Darcy Charles Fletcher, 1941. Darcy's discovery is like an explosion in her family - secrets are exposed and nothing will ever be the same.
