Finding Darcy, Sue Lawson

'There was a TV show about the war, and I asked where her dad fought.'

Mum gripped the steering wheel tight. 'Don't ever ask her again, Darcy.'

'What's the big--?'

'I mean it, Darcy. Never.'

When Darcy Abbott is given a school assignment to find out about how her family were affected by World War II, she isn't impressed. Her mum has told her to never mention the war to Misery and Batty, her disapproving grandmother and cranky great-grandmother. So Darcy tries sneakery - going through drawers when Misery and Batty aren't home - and she finds a photo of a man in army uniform. Written on the back are the words Darcy Charles Fletcher, 1941. Darcy's discovery is like an explosion in her family - secrets are exposed and nothing will ever be the same.

Finding Darcy is longlisted for the Golden Inky.
