Martin family birthday breakfasts followed a strict tradition. First, there were Belgian waffles, made by Belinda, the beloved Hopewell Hotel cook. These were served up with an array of toppings: chocolate syrup, fresh lemon whipped cream, stewed strawberries, and powdered vanilla sugar. The air should have been thick with wafflely perfume. Instead, there was an acrid, confusing smell, undercut by a light touch of smoke.
I was reading the On the Jellicoe Road reviews posted on insideadog by readers. Indeed humbling and so thoughtful and the soundtrack suggestions made me laugh (especially Sexual Healing).
I will tell you very briefly what goes through the mind of a writer (well me anyway) when their novel is out there in the reading wilderness at the mercy of what other people think.
Usually a writer has spent anywhere between 18 months and 10 years writing their novel, so their readers rating it high means so much.

Hi Melina, I’ve really appreciated your insightful and honest blogging. To that friend who hasn’t read your novel - ouch! I have a friend like that too, or maybe she’s read my novel but just doesn’t want to say because she hated it so much? I’m not game to ask. I think you can have one bad review, or even one line of criticism in a good review and it makes you forget all those great reviews that came before. delwyne
