Suite Scarlett

Martin family birthday breakfasts followed a strict tradition. First, there were Belgian waffles, made by Belinda, the beloved Hopewell Hotel cook. These were served up with an array of toppings: chocolate syrup, fresh lemon whipped cream, stewed strawberries, and powdered vanilla sugar. The air should have been thick with wafflely perfume. Instead, there was an acrid, confusing smell, undercut by a light touch of smoke.

Writer in Residence

Never read or seen

Science fiction writer John Scalzi admits that he’s never read any of the Harry Potter books, which got us thinking about what books/tv/films we’ve never seen that everyone craps on about.

Stuff neither of us has read or seen:

    American or Australian Idol
    Big Brother
New Dr Who (in fact, only a few random eps of the old Dr. Who)
    CSI
    24
    Grey’s Anatomy
    House
    Neighbors
    Blue Heelers
    Secret Life of Us

And we’ve never seen any live Australian rugby, league, or AFL matches.

Neither of us has read any book by John Grisham, Danielle Steel, or Tom Clancy (who are 3 out of 4 top-selling authors of the 1990s in the US. Though we have read the other one: Stephen King). Not to mention Nora Roberts and Jacqueline Sussan. Nor Dan Brown, the biggest selling (non-JK Rowling) author of this decade. And no Left Behind books or any of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

Scott’s list:

Not only have I not seen the new Dr. Who, I’ve only seen a few random eps of the old Dr. Who. This means at Australian science fiction conventions there’s always about 45 mins at 1AM where I get to nod and smile, understanding nothing.

I’ve also not seen:

any version of Dancing with the Stars
    Fantasia
    Oprah
    any Spielberg movie since ET
live US football game of any kind

I’ve never read:

David Eddings, Georgette Heyer, Robert Jordan, Anne McCaffrey, or Terry Pratchett. And among top selling authors for young people, no Judy Bloom, Enid Blyton, Meg Cabot, Laura Ingalls Wilder, or Richard Scarry.

Justine’s list:

    E.T.
    Titanic
    Heroes
    Desperate Housewives

and I’ve never read

    The Book Thief
    The Princess Diaries
    Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
Dhalgren (but I’ve read almost all Delany’s other books)
Or any Agatha Christie, Ian Flemming, R. L. Stine.

I’m sure there’s more, but I can’t think what they are right now.

Some of these I really want to see, like the new Doctor Who, and I’m looking forward to reading all the Princess Diaries when the series is all finished, which is soon, right?

But you could not pay me to watch E.T. or Titanic. At this point they’ve both been so parodied I couldn’t see them straight even if I wanted to. Plus neither is my kind of movie. I need cheerleaders (Bring It On) and things blowing up (Night Watch Infernal Affairs). But not cheerleaders blowing up. That would be wrong. I like cheerleaders. They’re so leapy.

So what’s on your list?

  1. Ellen Says:

My list looks surprisingly like yours! I have seen the new Doctor Who (it’s great), House (it’s not bad), and Titanic, and read Meg Cabot and Laura Ingalls Wilder, though.

I’ve never read Roald Dahl, which a lot of people are shocked about.

  2. Taylor Says:

    I’ve never read:
The Giver (well, i started but never finished)
the 6th or 7th Harry Potter book ( i always read the book like a month or two before the movies come out, so yeah)
    any of the Clique series
Peaches (some book two of my friends loved, so i’ll probably read it evenually)
And I haven’t read anything by Judy Blume, Laura Ingalls Wilder (i can’t get into Little House books)

    I’ve never seen:
    E.T.
    Desperate Housewives
    Happy Feet
America’s Got Talent (but i have seen So You Think You Can Dance)

i love Heroes though! it’s my favorite show. And i like House (sooo much sarcasm in that show).

  3. capt. cockatiel Says:

It pains me that you have not seen House, as it is super funny and very good.
I’ve never seen E.T., Grey’s Anatomy or 24. I haven’t seen a lot of things, actually. I’ve never read The Book Theif or The Princess Diaries, either.

  4. Steve Buchheit Says:

Oh, the lists of what I have not read or watched (movies and TV) are legion. I could walk into any bookstore and admit to not having read at least 75% of what they’re selling (as fiction). I don’t watch much TV to begin with, and going to movies are a Big Thing(tm). So while I have an extensive collection of DVDs, most are classics. I do read the reviews and plot descriptions of the big things. And I try and keep up with what is happening in my writing field, or at least what’s Cool To Me (thank you Mr. Brust).

  5. Dawn Says:

There are a lot of things on your list that I’ve never done as well. I have been to a live U.S. football game once, it was all right. GO CHIEFS! hehe. Not that I really care.

I’ve also never watched Oprah, and Fantasia isn’t worth spending your time to watch it. Really. Titanic and E.T.? Eh. No biggie.

  6. sara z. Says:

I’ve never seen Schindler’s List, Caddyshack, Lost, Heroes, 24. Haven’t read The Book Thief (or the majority of award-winning novels). Never read The Great Gatsby, or any Harry Potter.

  10. AshAngelAk Says:

Wow sorry my list was so long >.

  11. ShellTheShark Says:

well, you are lcuky for having never seen many of those shows, such as American Idol. not very good television.
I don’t watch TV or movies (almost never) and haven’t since i was really little, so my list is mostly all the popular TV shows and stuff.
    i have never seen:
    Snakes on a Plane
    Titanic
    24
    House
    Lost

or really almost any TV show, except American Idol. which sucks.

  12. hwalk Says:

I’m not even aware of all the things I haven’t read or seen, and I’m sure my list would fill up way too much space.

Thing is, I don’t care what I haven’t read and/or seen. Because there is just too much out there and I have things to do.

  13. Bri-la Says:

    never read:

  14. James Says:

Yeah, the Princess Diaries will finish somewhat soon. The final volume comes out in December 2008.

This’ll prolly get me in trouble but I haven’t read either of your books, though I do want to. Once I get through the books I’ve checked out from the library, I’ll go on a hunt for both of yours.

I also haven’t read Harry Potter, but will prolly do so this coming fall semester. I figured I’d just wait for all 7 to come out and the hubbub to die down before reading any of them.

  15. Emily Says:

I would have a list longer than any of your if it was last year, but after starting a new school and seeing my friends are all obsessees of some sort, I have seen in the course of a year, all the Pirates of the Carribean, a whole bunch of musicals, including Phantom of the Opera… and, well, the list goes on and on, and I’m tired… I will elaborate later.

  16. Kaylee Says:

Ok so you guys are seriously missing out on Greys Anatomy, House, Lost, and a bunch more shows…i watch too much tv…but seriously check out Greys Anatomy..tomorrow night. ok well enough of my obsession with Greys Anatomy.

Hmmm… I have not seen a bunch of those shows suprisingly…thats shocking because i watch tv a lot.

Heres my list of not seens:
    24
    Dr. Who
    Dancing With the Stars
    The OC
    Heros
    Desperate Housewives
…ok so theres a lot more but i can’t think of them at the moment.

    books i’ve never read:
    Gossip Girls
    Harry Potter
sadly only the Uglies Trilogy of Scotts books..
and none of Justines =( ..but i promise i will read them all sometime soon.

Anyways I’ve probably taken up way to much space.

One last note: Justine you should watch Greys Anatomy!! Scott I’m assuming you don’t like chick flicks…so i wouldn’t recomend this for you…but you might like House. Check it out sometime.

  17. stacy aka orangedragonfly Says:

    sadly, i have not read:

-pride and prejudice (or any austen, actually)
    -jane eyre
-anything by charles dickens except for a christmas carol and great expectations
    -animal farm
    -the davinci code
-of the top four authors of the 1990s you listed, i haven’t read danielle steel or tom clancy

    i’ve never seen:

    -casablanca
    -gone with the wind
    -the godfather (any of them)
-any of the die hard movies (my husband is flabbergasted at that one)
-any movies released in 2007 except for shrek the third
    -pulp fiction
    -grey’s anatomy
    -ugly betty
    -jericho

that’s all the pops into my head this morning. i know the is much longer…

it’s an interesting topic, though. :)

  18. stacy aka orangedragonfly Says:

i just realized…when i wrote “sadly” about the things i haven’t read, i was talking about the classics. i’m not too put off about missing brown, steel, or clancy…

  19. ariel cooke Says:

I actually love Grey’s Anatomy. But I’ve also never seen American Idol, Big Brother, Survivor, So You Want to Be a Millionaire or any of those other reality TV shows.

I’ve never read Don DeLillo, Jonathan Safran Foer, David Foster Wallace, Wally Lamb, and most of the other supposedly literary contemporary male authors. (I’ve tried and failed. Please, give me Junie B. any day over them.) Also haven’t read any Joyce Carol Oates since Them. (Too depressing.)

    Movies: haven’t seen Citizen Kane.

  20. Taylor Says:

yeah i think that we should send Justine the first season of Grey’s Anatomy in the mail, and send Scott the first season of House. except we don’t have their address. and i don’t want to have to go through a New York City phonebook. and they’re probably unlisted.

I like Grey’s Anatomy, but to be completely honest, i like House sooo much better. i set my DVR to record all episodes of it, so i have all these reruns FOX plays on my tv. i just watched one last night! it was that one where the firefighter had the heart attacks whenever the girl he loved walked in the room and House went on trial (but it’s lot less soap opera-y and a lot more sarcasm-filled than it sounds). good stuff, good stuff.

and here’s some words to live by: Save the cheerleader, save the world!

  21. hillary! Says:

Wow! I’ve tried reading some of those authors that you have listed, but they were too…I don’t know, I just knew what was going to happen, I don’t even like Stephen King, too much detail, but Anne Rice is the shiznat! Heroes is fawesome because it’s like my favorie books come to life. Dan Brown is suspenseful and keeps you thinking just like House, who also happens to be cynical and sarcastic. Terry Pratchett is just plain hysterical, you think your’e getting one thing, but you actually get the exact opposite, which is what makes it so gosh darn knee slappingly funny. Meg Cabot is just cute. And I grew up with Harry Potter, I discovered him at my school, and he’s saved me from depression many times, including the times it was caused by him too. Other than that, I either just don’t care, think it’s been talked about too much, or have never heard of it, like Dr Who. You people need to watch Bones.

  22. Amy-la Says:

justine, two tv shows on your list are my favorite shows! heroes and desperate hosewives are so awesome!

  23. Jess Says:

oh. i want to read the book thief.

  24. Brandi Says:

Lost. I’ve never seen Lost. Or House. Or any show that’s currently showing (except the 4400).

    Which is different.

Oh, and I’ve never seen Gone with the Wind. Hmmf.

  25. Mike Says:

I’ve never been able to finish Cloudstreet by Tim Winton. That’s the real reason I had leave Western Australia. Couldn’t show my face in public.

  26. Natalie Says:

    I have never seen(movies):
    Gone with the wind
    Casablanca
    The original king kong
    Schindler’s List
    The Godfather movies
    V for Vandetta
    A Clockwork Orange
    The original Godzilla
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    Back to the Future series

I have never seen (TV shows):
    Anything on MTV
    Boxing on TV
    One Tree Hill
    Sex and the City
    The Sapranos
    The X-Files

    I have never read:
    The Picture of Dorian Gray
    Sence and Sensability
    The Grapes of Wrath
    War and Peace

  27. Lauren Says:

Not having ever read Terry Pratchett is a crime.

  28. anna Says:

justine you MUST read the book theif! it is soooo good!!!!! and REALLY sad!!!!!

  29. Rebecca Says:

I musta missed this post. Oh wells, here’s mine, a bit late.

You could fill a small country with the things I’ve never seen. My parents weren’t big fans of movie theaters, or screen-related entertainment in general, so I didn’t watch much of anything besides Sesame Street until I was in high school.

    Things I haven’t seen:
    The Rocky Horror Picture Show
    Jurassic Park
    Titanic
    Heroes
    Battlestar Galactica
    Babylon 5
    Desperate Housewives
    American Idol
    Grey’s Anatomy
    The OC
    Oprah
    Sex and the City
    talk shows
reality shows (well, I’ve seen bits of episodes here and there, and I hates ‘em)

    I’ve never read:
    Stephen King
    Anne Rice
    Laurell K. Hamilton
Meg Cabot, except one Mediator book
The da Vinci Code (didn’t like Angels and Demons)
    John Grisham
    Tom Clancy
    Cecily von Ziegesar
    Agatha Christie
    Terry Pratchett
    Tamora Pierce

    And plenty more, I’m sure.

  30. Katie Says:

Never seen Heroes??? It’s the best show ever! So is CSI!

  31. Katie Says:

Justine, I love when things blow up too. But cheerleaders blowing up *would* be a little strange. I especially like Casino Royale and Live Free or Die Hard.

  32. Cat-kha Says:

Hmm… Well for TV my list of never seen is most things that have ever existed. I’ve seen… um… wait for it… *ponders for about an hour*
I’ve seen FullMetal Alchemist, which I’m obsessed with; The Daily Show, because my mom used to get people to tape it; and the Oscars, because seeing them’s kind of a ritual where I live.
    And that’s it.
I’ve read a lot of authors and couldn’t really name many I haven’t read off the top of my head.. well no Terry Pratchet or Holly Black, i haven’t read So Yestarday or Peeps, nor have I read any of Justine’s books but I’m looking for them. I’ve only read one Stephen King book, and as for those of you who haven’t read the Da Vinci Code, it’s no loss, Angles & Demons was better, Deception Point and Digital Fortress outshining by far anything with Robert Pain-in-the-neck Langdon in it any day.
Uh sorry for the ranting. Have a nice day or night or whenever you’re reading this.

    C

  33. Cat-kha Says:

PS - Anyone who hasn’t read the Bartimaeus Trilogy, if you like fantasy READ IT! The Amulet of Samarkaund was wonderful and the Golem’s Eye might’ve been the worst in it but it still gets 4.8 stars and Ptolemy’s gate just blew me away. Jonathan stroud is an amazing writer basically.
PPS- I wish someday that people would be like ‘you’ve never read book X?’ only that book X would be whatever tDoaS ends up being named… Okay, I wrote another really long comment. I’m sorry.
    sinCerely
    C

  34. The Dreamer Says:

for grownups who like sci-fi I recommend Snow Crash. I forget the author’s name.
This thread is very interesting though on some things I’m like “WHAT? They haven’t read book X? OMG! Neanderthal!” …just joking, but people, read Tamora Pierce, okay?

  35. Cat-kha Says:

…Oh, I just remembered, I’ve seen Xfiles too. Other than that I have seen nothing. Nothing I tell you! *backs away*
