Do you know your Horus from your Herakles?
If you want to read fantasy, but don’t feel like hanging out in Middle Earth, try these great reads set in the real world… with a twist.
My latest book is Garden of the Purple Dragon
It’s about the continuing adventures of ex-slave girl Ping and her young dragon charge.
The best thing about being a writer is it only takes me 60 seconds to get to work and I can knock off whenever I like.
If I wasn’t a writer I’d be working less (though I can knock off whenever I like, usually I don’t!)
My first published work was Stagefright a contemporary teen novel about high school kids making a musical version of Shakespeare’s Richard III
Morning person or night-owl? Morning. I’m not one of those writers who stays up till 3 am writing. My brain ceases to function after 10 pm.
My first job was as a laboratory technician. I made microscope slides of cats’ brains.
On a quiz show, my special subject would be dragons.
My last holiday was driving around New Zealand. What a beautiful place! Why have Kiwis got such a chip on their shoulder about Australia? Their country is just gorgeous (and they’ve got a female PM who doesn’t pander to George Bush, not to mention the Finn brothers).
My perfect Saturday is having no social engagements. Homemade pizza for dinner and a good DVD.
The last CD I bought was haven’t bought one for a while. The last one was either Guangling Melody (Chinese music for inspiration) or Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan (replacing vinyl).
I’m currently reading The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud (for pleasure). Hatshepsut: from Queen to Pharaoh and Records of the Grand Historian: Han Dynasty (for research).
Big Brother or Australian Idol? I would rather stab my hand with a fork than watch either of them.
Favourite film/tv show is at the moment I’m enjoying 6th season of The West Wing on DVD. I’m looking forward to the new series of Dr Who.
My favourite book is Possession by A S Byatt. A literary mystery that opens in a library. Love it.
The book character I would most like to meet is Aragorn
The book character I would least like to meet is Mrs Bennett
The worst thing I’ve ever written is the very first draft of everything I’ve ever written.
When I was growing up I wanted to be independently wealthy
My heroes are Bob Brown (a national treasure) and Ursula LeGuin (still writing at 77)
