My latest book is lonesome howl – a verse-novel for YA. (due Aug 2006)
It’s about Jake and Lucy who go looking for the truth behind the story Jake’s Dad tells him of a wolf in the mountains.
The best thing about being a writer is I work when I want and I don’t have to go to an office every day.
If I wasn’t a writer I’d be a (failed) professional soccer player.
My first published work was a book for adults called “Caboolture”.
Morning person or night-owl? Morning – I only write in the morning – the afternoon and evening is for walking, kayaking, soccer, food and anything else that doesn’t require too much thought. I’m a lazy bastard.
My first job was as a Storeman, and I got paid $31 for a 38-hour week!
On a quiz show, my special subject would be easy... Soccer.
My last holiday was to New Zealand, where I did lots of shows in Libraries and travelled around with my family. The most beautiful country in the world. And it was there while sitting on a mountainside admiring the view, my teenage son, Joe told me he loved me. Well, the words he used were, and I quote, “Shut up, or I’ll drive a stake through your head.” But, I think he was joking...
My perfect Saturday is food, followed by playing for my soccer team (preferably scoring a hat-trick), followed by more food, and drink.
The last CD I bought was Devils and Dust by Bruce Springsteen (who is the only major influence on my writing).
I’m currently reading It’s not all about you, Calma! by Barry Jonsberg – absolutely brilliant. The old fart can certainly write.
Big Brother or Australian Idol? Please drop all contestants in these shows into a decomposing vat of camel urine.
Favourite film/tv show is: Film – Field of Dreams. TV – Coupling.
My favourite book is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
The book character I would most like to meet is Tom Joad from The Grapes of Wrath.
The book character I would least like to meet is John Howard (someone must have written a book about him, surely!)
The worst thing I’ve ever written is my own biography.
When I was growing up I wanted to be ... come on... a soccer player!!!!
My heroes are Bruce Springsteen, and people who work on a daily basis to help humankind without ever being recognized for their efforts.
